RELATIONS between Russia and Cyprus have withstood the test of time and offer an opportunity not only to openly share views on various issues on the international agenda but also to bring forward mutually beneficial bilateral cooperation, according to Russian ambassador Vyacheslav Shumskiy.
Shumskiy was speaking this week at the 2nd International Conference on Investments into Russian Regions via Cyprus.
“We enjoy positive and fruitful contacts between state bodies and various government agencies of our countries, which stimulate Russian companies to develop their businesses in Cyprus and Cypriot financial structures to invest into Russian regions,” the ambassador told delegates.
Shumskiy said the ties between Cyprus and Moscow and St. Petersburg had been marked by obvious progress. “But I would like to note that Russia is not limited to these two capital cities. Cypriot businesses should pay attention to the territories located in the Volga region, Siberia and in the Far East,” he said, noting that the conference was attended by representatives of Smolensk region, Republic of Tatarstan, and Tver region.
He also mentioned Cyprus’ solid foundations for cultivating productive ties with the Krasnodar region. Since 1992 the Russian-Cypriot intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the development of the Black Sea region of Russia had been in place.
“The Cyprus experience in the sphere of tourism and in the creation of financially attractive area for global business would be very useful to the Black Sea region of Russia,’ Shumskiy said.
He said Cyprus and Russia still had “vast opportunities to enhance and deepen fruitful cooperation”.
“Large-scale national projects carried out in Russia require significant investments. Construction of transport infrastructure, tourist and sports facilities, introduction energy-saving technologies, as well as projects within the framework of the preparation for the Winter Olympics in Sochi in 2014 and the FIFA World Cup in 2018 might be attractive to Cypriot businessmen,” he concluded.
The 1st Vice-Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Economic Relations of the Government of the Moscow region, Igor Nikolaevskiy said that investments in the Moscow region via Cyprus in 2010 involved €859 million and it was the second country after Germany for investments in the Moscow region.
Among the Cypriot speakers at the conference were senior officials from the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, CySec, the Cyprus Stock Market and CIPA.
The three-day conference was organised by Georgiades & Mylonas and AB Consulting.
