China on Friday, May 27, said that the Foreign Ministers of Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa (BRICS) have “reached consensus on its expansion process” and have agreed to include the new developing countries. Beijing is holding a rotating Presidency of the BRICS bloc this year, and its foreign ministry said Friday that it actively supports the expansion of the five-member group. The remark comes just a day after Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Saudi Arabia and Argentina have expressed a desire to join the group.

The BRICS May 19 Foreign Ministers’ virtual meeting included Foreign Ministers of Argentina, Egypt, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Nigeria, Senegal and Thailand who were also given a formal invitation. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also took part in the BRICS Foreign Ministers meeting convened by his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi. BRICS' New Development Bank (NDB) has already enrolled Bangladesh, the UAE, Egypt and Uruguay as its official members.

Moscow’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told state-affiliated TASS that the oil-rich Arab world countries have shown interest to join BRICS and establishing partner relations with the eight-member Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), which includes India, Russia, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

Interest in BRICS shown by 'our Saudi friends and Argentina': Russia's FM

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, meanwhile, was quoted as saying by state-affiliated TASS that the interest in BRICS was shown by “our Saudi friends and Argentina, which stated the desire to become a full-fledged BRICS member, coming from the mouth of its (Argentina) Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero.” Lavrov stated that the preparations are being made to organise the next summit and that the outreach format will be established within its framework. More than a dozen developing economies will participate, said Russia’s foreign minister.

Affirming Lavrov’s comments, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said that BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs, that includes India, have reached a consensus on the BRICS expansion process.

“As the BRICS Chair this year, China actively supports the start of the BRICS expansion process and broadens 'BRICS Plus' cooperation,” Wenbin told a media briefing. He iterated that BRICS cooperation is “open and inclusive”.

Wow, what a great (and strange?) coalition. I never thought that I would find china and india in the same sentence given the historically competitive spirit of both countries and their difference when it comes to different matters like the south china sea and the border issues.

It's surprising though (Well not really That surprising) to find Egypt, UAE, indonesia and uruguay included in this list. I like the both sides east/west balance that some countries try to maintain, but fo how long? so far it worked very well in Egypt, UAE and some central Asian countries like Kazakhstan but only time well tell.

Great news. although not so great for our patriot, freedom loving pals in the forum smi(&%

BRICS will grow while OECD stagnates. I guess that SA+AE will pull in the other gulf states, Iran, Syria and Belarus will follow Russia, Pakistan could follow China (subject to US interventions in Paristan's democracy), Africa and most of Asia are likely to turn red. If anything, Turkey looks the odd one out.

Uh . . . nice inaccurate map. In reality, Africa is almost twice as large as Russia. And Greenland is a possession of Demark and should be colored Green. Moreover, Australia is about 3.5 times larger than Greenland. That is erroneous information that I can name just off the top of my head.

This is exactly how BS information gets passed around as truth.

I doubt that many people here are measuring which acres of tundra are aligning East and West but @Golden Fleece you're welcome to provide any map projection of your choosing.
You missed my point entirely. Maps will almost always be inaccurate, because the Mercator projection does not accurately reflect the true size of countries given the impossibility of representing a 3D object on a 2D surface.

My point: Instead of presenting obviously inaccurate information, do your own homework (instead of relying on the ignorance of others) and present an actual chart that compares land area, population, GDP, other economic measurements, etc. Maps simply do not work for this purpose.

This is exactly how our enemies (i.e., socialists) skew information for their own nefarious purposes. We need to be better than that -- and we must train ourselves to think critically and call out their BS.

BTW: This is not meant as any type of personal attack, just some constructive criticism.

Nice list of dictatorships and quasi-dictatorships you got there thu&¤#
Does that mean anything if you can work your way around it? no. plenty of countries "supress" free speech one way or another, but some hide it better than others utilizing different words like "hate" "crime" "woke" "PC" "Nazis" "anti-semitism" ...and the list goes on.

I mean freedom of speech doesn't protect you from the consequences of said speech, am I right?

I will k*ll joe biden, that's a freedom of speech, good luck saying that in washington and see what happens!

Or say different opinion than the status quo and you will find the mob coming after you, doxxing you, get you fired and ruin your whole life.

So, widen your view and don't look at these complex issues from one angle.

There are better things to worry about! What about safety? healthcare? Education? police brutality? real freedom of speech without the censoring BS? and overall quality of life?

Look at the "pinnacle" of freedumb, the great almighty that's called the USA, what are they doing now? I guess they are busy handling the 22 mass shooting that's happening in 2022 alone. wait, they are conducting an NRA meating after dozens of Children were ki*led....yeah the children. Man, after sandy hook, my whole view of america and americans turned 180. they did nothing to stop this s**t. Feels like I'm in somalia, not "the greatest country on earth"

Enough of my rambling, back to topic, of course I prefer to deal within the rules and deal with countries that have great laws and everything is plain and simple and yada yada yada, That's why I have Estonian companies, their laws are very clear and simple to follow, and zero red tapes, but I also like the other countries where you are able to get s**t done with certain connections instead of trying to deal with the bureaucratic hell holes that exists in "Clean" countries whatever that means.

Bottom line is that BRICS will continue to expand which is a good thing. I already discussed Argentina and China's relations below. I think the world has a bright future.

I think you read rather a lot into the coloured map. Blue is OECD, red is BRICS and light red shows a current tendency to expand BRICS.

The main thing that jumps out to me is what the grey coloured countries think when they look at this changing landscape.

The First World and Second World were largely characterised by a "closed" second world. This time things are different. China is now outward looking and "Western" countries lack leadership.

We can already see a big change from old alignment to new alignment. Maybe I'm wrong and somehow the African and Asian countries that haven't already aligned will all sign up to OECD and NATO along with Pakistan, the other Stans and the non aligned Middle East. Personally I see the trend going in the other direction.

I mentioned Turkey as a potential "soft blue" above; let's not even get into opinion polling in Greece!

In the long term, the BRICS experiment will fail because Russia and China do not operate under a rule of law. Whether it is a country, a business, or even a family, the established rules must apply fairly and equally to everyone.

For example, ten island nations just rejected consideration of a sweeping trade and security agreement with China. Those leaders are wise enough to know that once a totalitarian government gains a foothold in their country, they will likely lose their freedom.

Silvio was correct in post #6, "Nice list of dictatorships and quasi-dictatorships you got there." Russia and China will likely alienate India and Brazil over time. I do not envision any type of long-term alliance.

Well one hearing this, following theory comes to mind. Having a mess in Eurasia is helping someone.

This will more likely drive India and China closer together ultimately with some sort of agreement. Border skirmishes have been going on there for decades and it is a zero win game for each side in end. BRICS will resolve the issue internally. A mutual friend of both Russia may play a part ;).
