Opinions on buying Gemstones as an investment?

I met with a family friend who's a Gem consultant and a trader, and had a conversation about how people buy gemstones as investments.

I haven't seen this concept in mainstream investing, so it's rather new to me.

Do any of you have any opinions on this subject?

I think you need to know what you're doing in order to invest in gemstones.

Maybe you can buy a few gemstones just for fun, for relatively small amounts, and try to learn about them, with no expectations of making money.

Yeah unless you are a gemstone expert you're asking for trouble, and as a non-expert listening to an expert who is also selling those gemstones - is not a recipe for success.

Luckily the internet is filled with useful info on what makes a stone valuable investment versus a nice decoration and it wouldn't take a huge amount of time and study to know enough not to be taken advantage of.
