What are peoples experiences with Rio (Brazil).

Seeing as the West becomes un-investable as it continues to its socialist surveillance state, the East is still a generation or two away from 'true' democracy, South America has suffered with Commie/Socialism, and Dictators and slowly becoming democracies with commodities, and rule of law, and shredding socialistic aspects after generations of inflation and internal strife.

Rio looks interesting.

Hello @wellington

The safest areas are listed here: Bairros do Rio: conheça os mais seguros na Cidade Maravilhosa!

If you have any questions, you can always ask the Redditors of this subreddit: Reddit - Dive into anything I suggest you do that and NOT rely on simply my opinion. I may have blindspots I am unaware of.

I can vouch that if you have money and don't care to live on a "small island" with all the amenities known to man in Angra dos Reis, it's fascinating as there are NO wealth taxes in Brazil. What you can NOT do under ANY circumstances is to use Brazil as your CRS country for your international accounts. For a mere (max) $500K, you can use 2 neighboring countries and spread your risk evenly! Never bridge them. Brazilians are terrified of the unknown, especially if it includes the USA and Europe. None of them want ANY smoke with authorities in the USA or Europe.

You can use Google Translate here:
Warning!
Most Latin Americans see us as easy prey. Prices in Brazil cannot be listed, by law, in anything other than Brazilian Real.

As most foreigners can't read, much less comprehend Portuguese legalese, they get "robbed" by the natives. Don't be one of those easy targets.

I suggest *a must*, going on vacation to Rio de Janeiro prior to making ANY decisions.

Here are my personal recommendations in the SAME way I effectuated them decades ago and in order of preference (I had a great mentor then - may he RIP):
  1. https://www.belmond.com/hotels/south-america/brazil/rio-de-janeiro/belmond-copacabana-palace
  2. https://fairmontrio.com/en/
  3. https://www.hilton.com/en/hotels/riocchh-hilton-rio-de-janeiro-copacabana/
Make sure the hotel picks you up at the airport and you should pay for "protocol" to be fast-tracked at the Rio de Janeiro/Galeão–Antonio Carlos Jobim International AirportSBGL), popularly known by its original name Galeão International Airport. It is the main airport serving Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Source: https://www.riogaleao.com/passageiros

Let me know if you need more info. (No charge or any other BS... I don't charge for anything. This is NOT my business, but Latin America, especially, South America, is well within my circle of competence.) ;)

been there and its a pretty much a "smth which comes out at one end of the dog" hole. Furthermore the country is currently run by this lunatic criminal wef puppet. There is also no rule of law in latam. If one finds it, pls let me know.
That person who calls himself presidente do braziu is also mandating medical treatments to the weakest of society.

Good for a vacay (at best) and some fun (thats not too bad, esp if you speak some level of portugues or can understand it and speak whatever mix you can) , but nothing much else.

Since you have lived in Asia, you will have a pretty good shock there ;), its nothing like that not even touching it being very criminal which is not helpful as you have muuuitu dolares papi.

If you go from Thailand to Rio... It will take you 2 days to go back to Thailand lol.
latam just cannot match southeast asia in terms of security, service, price/value, easiness of life, while being an equal or even worse mess in terms of having to deal with the "system".

the good points of latam are getting easy passport and of course if one is native style fluent in spanish or portugues (brazil) and likes that culture and latinas, than its also unmatched and is a truly great spot. After all one should end up where one likes the predominant culture id say especially if circumstances allow.

rof/% Places that are homogenous or cold ("or" is inclusive) are the only ones immune to this...that is until self-appointed unproductive parasites disguised as "politicians" have this great idea to indiscriminately and with vetting start the process of "stirring the martini" smi(&%

There is beauty in this and I like this and here is why (below translated by Google Translate):
"According to the Brazilian Penal Code, anyone under 18 years of age is not responsible. In other words, the young person is unable to understand the seriousness of a crime. This means that crimes committed by minors are judged differently than those committed by adults.

Technically speaking, a minor does not commit a crime, but rather infractions. As for crime, it is an illicit act defined by criminal legislation. Therefore, there is no crime unless legislation has defined it."

Of course, this is NOT for everyone. If someone has a problem with a public servant and their idea of solving it is to have a dialog and listen to reason & logic according to the theory of the Rule of Law, Brazil is NOT for them! This method does NOT work in Europe, Asia, or the USA, so why should it work in Brazil or the rest of LATAM? If on the other hand, you see the "public servant" as your enemy and his actions as aggression...(fill in the blanks with whatever warms the cockles of your heart smi(&% )
Use Google Translate for the above link ;)

True, but will NEVER happen! The favelas are heavily armed! Some are better armed than the police.
Also,
Data Favela The Data Favela 2023 survey, released on Friday (17), showed that if Brazilian favelas formed a state, it would be the third largest in Brazil in terms of population. According to the study, the number of favelas has doubled in the last decade, totaling 13,151 mapped across the country. There are an estimated 5.8 million households in favelas with 17.9 million residents. The quantitative research was carried out between March 6 and 13, 2023 and interviewed 2,434 favela residents distributed across all regions of the country.
Source: Censo: falta de endereço em favelas dificulta registro de domicílios.

This is ONLY the favela! They aren't even counting "periferia", which I've read is at least 100 million people! Because...
70% of Brazilian workers earn up to two minimum wages Research based on IBGE data shows that 35.63% of Brazilian workers earn up to the minimum wage.
Source: https://www.correiobraziliense.com....ileiros-ganham-ate-dois-salarios-minimos.html

Note: The minimum salary is R$1,421/month which is about €270 per month. 70% of the population earns less than €540/month.

Definitely true for most, hence why I recommended @wellington first:

@JackAlabama is 100% correct here! Anyone who goes ANYWHERE in Latin America who is ostentatious will find themselves easily on the other side of the law real quick, regardless if they are the Pope! Actually, I would argue this for every country with the exception of Monaco, but this is my personal opinion and may just be my experience. Hell, my OWN family is 100% European and if they knew I earned "a little bit more than them", they would be conspiring & scheming to figure out how to rob me! stupi#21 #RealTalk #NOfilters!

100%! Especially, when I compare it to China. Japan for me is almost the same, except for the cost. LATAM is cheaper in terms of service and local food (vegetables, fruits, steaks, fish, chicken) than Japan IMHO.
I clearly, expressly, and unambiguously invoke my right against self-incrimination. rof/% smi(&% ;)

I forgot to mention that certain places in Brazil are MUCH MUCH more European than Europe and MUCH MUCH SAFER!
The European residents of these places are NOT making the same mistakes as Europe ;)

I'm sure certain places in Brazil are MUCH SAFER than certain cities in Europe.
Just make sure you leave a final will with your lawyer before you come and visit.

rof/% Cherry-picking Western propaganda is NOT conducive to a safe and healthy lifestyle. The people from Natal or Fortaleza have a BIGGER chance of going to Europe or the US than going to Santa Catarina or stepping foot in Angra dos Reis. If you speak to any of them, they prefer to go to Europe because they can get away with anything there. If they try that in Santa Catarina (e.g. Blumenau), they'll disappear. They'll never be seen or heard from again!

In these parts of what we refer to as "Little Germany", "Little Italy", and "Little Britain", etc etc. most signs are STILL in their original languages. ;)

Above, I included the Brazilian Oktoberfest which is here again: Home Oktoberfest - Oktoberfest

What exactly do you think these girls will do to you?

Now, on the other hand...in Europe, we have now this:

Europe has fallen, my friend! Evacuate the sinking ship! ;)

no boobs on show?
You just had to be there.... it was so amazing! Much better than the current ones back home. According to my cousins who are +20 years older than me, it's almost as good as what Oktoberfest was in the 70s in Germany.

I urge you to plan for next year. German is widely spoken during Oktoberfest. All the German-speaking people of Blumenau have conversational English too.
To me, it's Oktoberfest I remember in the 80s.

Being British, we understand other languages vaguely... we refuse to speak them though. ;)
