If a small/medium company decides to start long-term investing into stocks/ETFs/..., with 0 knowledge, what to recommend to them - hiring a financial advisor? corporate wealth management through a bank (if even exists)? external party / consultants?

Speak to multiple people (at least three) and pay them for that conversation. The ones that share a philosophy with you can go to your short(er) list for follow up conversations in which you pay them again and in go depth on how they would approach investing.

Also decide for yourself what kind of mandate you want to give out? Is it just bottomline results you are interested in? Or are certain industries excluded from investing in? etc.

Or... and I think that its the best solution, do it yourself. Educate yourself, network and become the master of your own finances.

I know someone who was the group financial consultant to the top multi-nationals, went on to design their own fund management platform, and performs wealth management, depends on how much capital being deployed and the expected returns per year, that determines which structures to use, which assets to use, how to breakdown the asset split, etc.
