PayPal has joined forces with government agency Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) to power the m-commerce infrastructure of Singapore’s Digital Concierge Programme.

PayPal aims to accelerate the growth of m-commerce by enabling businesses and consumers to securely conduct transactions and make payments via their mobile devices such as the iPhone and Android devices.

Regional head of mobile products for PayPal Asia Pacific Rahul Shinghal made a statement on the company website announcing the deal. He noted Singapore is a nation with 138 percent mobile penetration and that eight out of every ten mobile handsets bought are smartphones.

“Singapore possesses great potential for widespread adoption of mobile commerce as an increasing number of retailers want to use the mobile channel to extend their reach and consumers want easy-to-use, secure payment methods on their mobile phones,” said Shinghal.

PayPal are expecting to power hundreds of mobile services and apps in Singapore over the next few years - an example of which is the upcoming mobile shopping app for online shopping site Reebonz. It will allow its members throughout Asia Pacific, US, Canada and the UK to view and purchase any product on Reebonz.com via PayPal on an iPhone.

Digital Commerce is one of the programmes launched under the IDA’s ten year ‘Intelligenct Nation Masterplan’ and is targeted at transforming the Tourism, Hospitality and Retail Sector.
