Hello,

As the title says, i would like to renew my passport without ever needing to go back to my country.

I like to live most of the year spending it in Asia as a tourist.

However, from what i understand, in order for me to renew my passport oversees, among the documents i need as a proof of residency is only the "Lease agreement".

If i book 1 month on an Airbnb:

  • Can the host provide me with a Lease agreement with my name, and address on it?
  • Is 1-month duration accepted with a lease agreement in the embassy for my passport renewal application?
Any advice on the matter would be deeply appreciated.

Thank you

Depends on the laws of the country of which you're a citizen.

Many only allow renewal of ordinary passport if you can prove residence there, but will issue an emergency passport. To prove residence, you're usually asked to show residence permit or other evidence that you're registered as a resident. Having a lease usually won't suffice, unless it's stamped by the immigration and/or tax office. Different rules in different places.

Just check with your country's embassy.

From my research, most consulates will require proof of residence in the consular region in order to process a passport application and issue a passport. I haven’t done this process yet, but my research covers Italy, the UK, and Canada for a consular region in the United States (Canada is different here, though). For Americans, Canadian passports are applied for via mail and the IRCC has biometrics on file from the citizenship application process, and you only need proof of ID, not residence. Italy requires two forms of ID (first is typically a passport), one of which proves residence (residence permit or driver’s license in the US), regularized (correct) AIRE registration, and an appearance at the consulate to submit biometrics. The UK requires ID and proof of residency, but you can apply online and they have biometrics on file from either the citizenship ceremony or prior applications. The processes for Italy and UK appear to be similar for Indonesia, though it looks like the UK requires an in-person biometrics appointment at an ASC. Canada will have a different process outside of the US.

The UK will offer an emergency passport if your passport expires per their consular website. I’m uncertain how Italy or Canada handle this. All three should provide this in the case of a lost or damaged passport.
