Hello,

As the title says, i would like to renew my passport without ever needing to go back to my country.

I like to live most of the year spending it in Asia as a tourist.

However, from what i understand, in order for me to renew my passport oversees, among the documents i need as a proof of residency is only the "Lease agreement".

If i book 1 month on an Airbnb:

  • Can the host provide me with a Lease agreement with my name, and address on it?
  • Is 1-month duration accepted with a lease agreement in the embassy for my passport renewal application?
Any advice on the matter would be deeply appreciated.

Thank you

Depends on the laws of the country of which you're a citizen.

Many only allow renewal of ordinary passport if you can prove residence there, but will issue an emergency passport. To prove residence, you're usually asked to show residence permit or other evidence that you're registered as a resident. Having a lease usually won't suffice, unless it's stamped by the immigration and/or tax office. Different rules in different places.

Just check with your country's embassy.

From my research, most consulates will require proof of residence in the consular region in order to process a passport application and issue a passport. I haven’t done this process yet, but my research covers Italy, the UK, and Canada for a consular region in the United States (Canada is different here, though). For Americans, Canadian passports are applied for via mail and the IRCC has biometrics on file from the citizenship application process, and you only need proof of ID, not residence. Italy requires two forms of ID (first is typically a passport), one of which proves residence (residence permit or driver’s license in the US), regularized (correct) AIRE registration, and an appearance at the consulate to submit biometrics. The UK requires ID and proof of residency, but you can apply online and they have biometrics on file from either the citizenship ceremony or prior applications. The processes for Italy and UK appear to be similar for Indonesia, though it looks like the UK requires an in-person biometrics appointment at an ASC. Canada will have a different process outside of the US.

The UK will offer an emergency passport if your passport expires per their consular website. I’m uncertain how Italy or Canada handle this. All three should provide this in the case of a lost or damaged passport.

Guys, would you mind stating which country your passport is from, please. I renewed my passport in Guatemala on a tourist visum is pretty much useless information as the requirements are completely different for each embassy there. Switzerland will do it if you are deregistered in Switzerland and register yourself in Guatemala, while the UK will do it without much documentation. On the other hand, there will be embassies which won't move until you come with much more.

Lucky you.

Well i just contacted my embassy by email, and they required me to have a residence.

They said:

To renew your passport, You must be legally residing in Indonesia. So you must first obtain a valid long-term visa (work, study, family reunion, etc.)

Looks like i'm gonna have to come back to my country every 4 years to renew my passport

You need an immigration visa (KITAS/KITAP) .
It will not work with an tourist visa .
You can just get the e-33g visa which is KITAS .
Most embassies list the requirements on their website .
the e-33g visa sounds interesting.

I do have around $20k in the bank, but i don't have regular monthly income.

Will that still be acceptable?

I went through something similar last year, though not in Indonesia, I was in Vietnam on a tourist visa when I had to renew my passport.
While not the same country, the general process and obstacles might be familiar.

In my case, I had to go through my home country’s embassy, and they required both an in person appointment and proof that I had at least six months validity left to apply.
Timing was everything, and I nearly ran into issues with my visa extension because of the processing time.

What I learned: if you're on a tourist visa and trying to renew your passport abroad, always check whether the local immigration office is okay with you staying while your new passport is being processed. Some countries are fine with it as long as you have a receipt or confirmation from your embassy, while others can be tricky.

Out of curiosity does the Indonesian embassy accept walk ins for passport matters, or do you need to book online well in advance?
